11 Real Animals That Seem Too Weird to Exist
Forget aliens. Some of the strangest creatures in the universe are living right here on Earth. Every animal on this list is 100% real — even though a few of them sound completely made up.
1The axolotl
This smiling Mexican salamander keeps its baby features its whole life. Even wilder, it can regrow lost legs, its tail, and parts of its heart, spinal cord and even brain. Sadly, it’s critically endangered in its only wild home, the canals of Xochimilco near Mexico City.
2The mantis shrimp
Its club-like arms strike so fast that the water around them briefly forms bubbles that collapse with a tiny flash of light and heat. It can smash snail shells — and has been known to crack aquarium glass. Its eyes also have far more types of color receptors than ours.
3The tardigrade
Also called “water bears,” these creatures are smaller than a millimeter. They can survive drying out, freezing, and even the vacuum of space — in 2007, tardigrades rode outside a spacecraft in orbit and many survived.
4The platypus
A mammal that lays eggs. Males have venomous spurs on their back legs. It hunts by sensing the tiny electric fields of its prey through its bill. And in 2020, scientists discovered its fur glows blue-green under UV light.
5The wombat
Wombats poop cubes. They leave dozens of little blocks every night to mark their territory. Scientists figured out that the shape comes from different stretchiness in parts of their intestines — research that won an Ig Nobel Prize.
6The octopus
Three hearts, blue blood, and about two-thirds of its brain cells are in its arms rather than its head. Each arm can explore and react on its own.
7The “immortal” jellyfish
Turritopsis dohrnii can do something no other animal is known to do as well: when stressed or injured, the adult can transform back into its early polyp stage and start its life cycle over. It can still be eaten or get sick — but in theory it can keep “resetting.”
8The naked mole-rat
It looks like a wrinkly sausage with teeth, but it’s a superhero. Naked mole-rats can live over 30 years (mice their size live about 2 or 3), rarely get cancer, and can survive around 18 minutes without oxygen.
9The pistol shrimp
It snaps its claw so fast it fires a bubble that stuns prey. When the bubble collapses it makes one of the loudest sounds in the ocean and, for an instant, reaches temperatures of thousands of degrees.
10The sea cucumber
Some species breathe through their rear end. When threatened, some can shoot out their own internal organs to distract predators — then grow them back.
11The blobfish
Voted the world’s ugliest animal, but that’s not fair. In the deep sea where it lives, the pressure holds its body in a normal fish shape. It only turns into a droopy blob when it’s pulled up to the surface.
